Every school needs one

It was great to read in the Barrhead News how St Luke’s teacher Joe Herd was named Educational Supporter of the Year at the Scottish Education Awards. The modest winner beat off competition from across Scotland to win the award for his outstanding contribution to his school. Since taking on his role nine years ago, he has introduced a number of imaginative and innovative initiatives that have made a real difference to the lives of many pupils, particularly the most vulnerable, as well as their families and the wider community. As well as that Joe has to be admired for securing outside funding of more than £111,000 through his hard work. Above all colleagues, pupils and parents say he is a thoroughly decent man. I couldn’t agree more with depute head David Gordon who said every school needs a Joe Herd.
