Get on the ball for Fairtrade

The success of the Women’s World Cup and the viewing figures in the US for the final showed that football is not just for men. At a local level I have many friends and family who enjoy getting their boots on for a game of five a sides on a regular basis lapping up the chance to play the beautiful game. Now all those teams can help put Fairtrade in the spotlight by taking part in a FREE tournament at the Five on 5 pitches in Paisley on Sunday, August 9. Teams can put their skills to the test as they battle it out to lift the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Trophy. It’s a great event and you can enter or get more details by calling 0141 618 6745 or emailing fairtrade@renfrewshire.gov.uk  Like millions I love watching football but it’s easy to forget that most likely the ball in play has been hand stitched by someone working long hours in poor conditions in places like Pakistan where about 75% of footballs are produced and struggling to make sufficient money to survive. The Fairtrade system gives workers in the sports ball industry an opportunity to improve their lives and we can help raise awareness right here in Renfrewshire by backing this tourney.
